"A woman becomes available to a man in three ways: permanent matrimony, temporary nuptials and slavery." [page 138]
Of course Meshkini is not the only one having such an opinion. Most of Ayatollahs have plenty of similar approaches and quotes. Imagine what a society turns to be with such idealogic leaders. I get more upset when I think of their followers...!
Unfortunately there are many people who take the nonsense as statements of Islam and God; of which they have a strong conviction and go in pursuit. Even for those who are not merely blind-followers, it has always been difficult to even accept the effective presence of a woman in society as an independent individual...
Women who tried to step out of these limitations and boundaries were not usually taken seriously. Dared to ask for their rights and freedom, they have been accused of being disreputable or a risk to well-being of a so-called pure Islamic society…!!!
Discrimination against women is nothing new among Islamic societies. It is clearly stated in Islamic rules and quotes on which the conservative Islamists persist.
The highest governmental positions a woman has ever achieved to take in the Islamic Republic, has been: Vice-president in charge of Iran's Environment Protection Organization. In the current parliament which is known for its free election, the number of women members is below %4.
It was about a month ago that the international agreement on women’s rights was rejected by government’s supervisory body. Women have been ignored, belittled, mistreated, and abused in every means. And now even at the present critical situation which Iran’s government is under a lot of international attention and inspection, they didn’t even feel any obligations to accept the convention in order to decrease part of the external pressure at least. The question is whether women are entitled to any kind of right by the government of Islam(as they call themsleves)?
